Gordon Smith Grande Launch Edition Sovereign
The new Grandè is a fitting range-topper for Gordon Smith, the storied British guitar maker based in leafy Northamptonshire. Its release coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Gordon Smith brand, and we’ve been increasingly impressed in recent times, as the company has gone from plucky, punk-rock underdog, to established maker of truly world-class instruments - all under the steady hand of owner Doug Sparks. The launch of the Grande coincides with the establishment of Gordon Smith’s state-of-the-art new production facility, which has produced deeply impressive guitars from the outset.
As with all great new guitars, the Grande both nods towards the company’s history, while offering something new for today’s players. The front and rear body carves combine with the twin body binding to evoke the original Gordon Smith Gemini model, while the all-new silhouette has been penned by the company’s in-house designer Elliot Heggie. The Grande achieves a feat also accomplished by the Gatsby, managing to look familiar, and yet, simultaneously, completely fresh.
Thanks to its Obeche body construction, compact size, and body carving, the Grande is extremely light weight, weighing in at less than 7lbs. Its single-piece mahogany neck - set into the body - nevertheless ensures that it remains highly resonant and musical. Hyper-versatility is assured thanks to the twin hand-wound Partingtone Humbuckers, which are both coil-splittable thanks to push-pull volume and tone pots.
Seamless movement across the AAA-grade ebony fretboard is enabled by the classic thin profile neck and 12” radius fretboard. The fretboard is inlayed with Gordon Smith’s signature inlays in mother-of-pearl, while stainless steel frets have been fitted for longevity. Beneath the surface, CTS / Switchcraft wiring ensure reliability and optimal tonal performance.
