Your stompboxes can be connected to any of the 8 audio loops provided by the ES-8. The loops can be activated as needed to achieve various pedal combinations. The on/off state can be saved to a patch and then activated by the footcontroller of the BOSS ES8 itself. Guitar tone is preserved as the guitar signal is only routed through the effects chosen as needed .
The insert function allows rerouting of any of your effects at any time. If you want to move your reverb from last to first in your signal chain and add distortion then with the ES-8 this is now possible without unplugging patch cables and physically moving pedals around (usually in the dark!).
The parallel function takes two effects and can run them at the same time. The echo of your clean reverb sound can be heard against the edge of your distortion setting, rather than distorted reverb. This allows you to create sounds that would be impossible without two amplifiers and two pedalboard setups. In addition to the parallel function, the ES-8 has two selectable outs. You can run two completely different signal chains to two separate amps; clean and modulation effects to one amp and distortion plus phaser to another for example. This provides complete control over a stereo setup.
In addition to the eight loops provided, there is a volume loop with selectable inserts. This allows for a volume pedal to be inserted at any point of your signal chain at any time. This would allow you to blend in any effect that you would wish. Gradually fade in a reverb or a tremolo sound for example. The ES-8 has MIDI capability and can work seamlessly with MIDI controlled effects and has MIDI IN/OUT and THRU functions. It can also receive time stamp information from an external MIDI clock in order to control and sync tempo based effects.
The Boss ES8 Effects Switching System completely changes the versatility of any any existing pedalboard setup, allowing for previously impossible combinations and control. For anyone interested in experimenting with new sounds and combinations or getting the most out of an existing setup this is an absolute must.
